And  turn off the P.L.
It makes it sound awful on CW. 

I started out on Mode A with a Regency HR-2B
with one crystal,  keying the thing on CW and it
worked great. 15 watts did the trick. Made hundreds
of QSO's until I got a  better rig.

What got me started (this was in about 1974)  was 
the local folks talking about OSCAR on the 2 meter repeater
all the time.  SO one day I tried  just keying the mike and seeing
if I could actually hear my own signal.. Lo and behold... it was 
there!    The rest is history... 

I did the same with Oscar 10, using my old Heathkit HW-24, with only
10 watts and a 7 element beam I could actually hear myself coming back
on the downlink!   The CW signal was awful but I managed to work
about 10 stations.  So again, a better  UHF radio and I was in business!
