Hi Bob
I can reduce my Yaesu FT-736 10 watt output to 2 watts and still
get full quieting on AO-51.
I have an array of 4 x 27 turn helix fed with 35 feet of 5/8 inch
hardline.
I have tried the 10 watts into a single 27 turn helix and as
expected it worked as well as the 2 watts into the 4 x helix array.
On AO-40 I seldom used U/S as the L band array worked
so well on mode L/S for hundreds of QSO's.
See March/April 2004 AMSAT Journal for pictures and construction
details of my 4 x 27 turn helix L band array.
