Naw - RS-485 is easiest and cheapest way to go. You you need is the
converters and a reel of twisted pair. I've set them up quickly and
cheaply at an industrial sensing company, located on one of those huge
New England mill buildings. They have some built-in isolation.

I've used the B&B Electronics with good results.
