I had a setup back when we had AO-40 to play with that
used one for the elevation, and an old AR-33 for
azimuth, similar to what W0LMD has on his website.

It worked great, and had plenty of muscle to move my
1M dish around. The only elevation "feedback" I had
was looking at the dish and peaking the signal, but I
experimented a bit with using a pulse counter
connected to the reed switch/Hall Effect device that
was in the actuator.
I suspect you're right about adding that much load to
your existing setup. IIRC, the 5400 didn't have as
much torque on the azimuth motor as the 5500 does.
