Indeed, that can be done.  In fact, my controller does just that.  See http://home.wavecable.com/~ko6th.

But, the position pulses are 10 degrees apart.  For VHF/UHF communications this is fine, but when you get up into the higher bands it is barely usable.  With my 30 inch BBQ Grill, plus or minus one "click" resulted in a significant signal difference when receiving AO-40's S-band downlink.  Going analog (with pots and weights) can be done, but it's a different interface.  If we can stay digital, but with higher precision, that would be very interesting.

Why bother? The Alliance U-110 does not need a position sensor as
it already includes a pulse switch the can easily be used
to determine the position - yes, its not "high-tech" but it
is simple to just count the pulses in software and it also
works as an elevation rotor.
