You might want to contact John, the program author, for tips on compiling it on OSX, which IIRC, is BSD-based. I know BSD has a Linux compatibility package, but since I haven't used BSD in quite a while, I don't know how applicable it would be to running on a Mac.
It should compile just fine on Centos and Debian, which are Linux-based, as long as all the package dependencies are met.
The latest version is the one that's available. I don't know if John has plans for updating/enhancing it further.
