Please keep in mind that there is a gentleman's agreement amongst the
AMSAT's of the world that contesting would not be done on a satellite.
This is why you have not seen it done in the past. You can call it
something else as I had to do when we had the AO-40 Birthday Bash. When
I called it a contest, it was strictly frowned upon and the name was
changed. If I remember, it was a one or two week event to make contacts
on the first anniversary of the satellite's launch.
When you have an event, it must be something that is available to all
satellite users worldwide, not just an event for those on one continent
or country. That is why all the awards that AMSAT-NA offers as well as
some other AMSAT's are not called contests. They are operating
achievements and normally do not have a end of life. The AO-51 51 on 51
award was an event that lasted a year but did not require anything
special other than using the satellite to make contacts with 51
different stations. You can see where this is going vs. having a true
contest.

Something along this idea was suggested by a member of the BOD of AMSAT some time ago. Lets see if this idea has any traction.
