Actually, on busy passes of AO-51, I find phonetics best because it is often quite hard to hear weaker stations over the "free for all" that can occur Not all stations are full quieting into the sat, nor does everyone always have a great signal on the receiving end. :)

On FM, in my opinion, there is no need for phonetics except for
calls with troublesome letters. Most calls can be heard easily
without using up time with phonetics.
