Double sideband would be AM except that the carrier is greatly reduced.
You can still hear a little bit of carrier on AO-16 and helps with the
tuning in during doppler. I find that upper SSB works the best for me
whatever reason. This last pass was only 11 degrees, but I used my
homebrew 2-meter ground plane and it did a better job of getting into
the bird than the high-gain Ringer Ranger vertical. This would be
expected for higher elevations, but still worked well for the low one as
well.
I plan on trying to get my old 30 degree slopper 70 cm ground plane I
made some time ago for the down link and see how it does. Right now I am
using a dual band gain vertical. I suspect the results will be similar
to the 2-meter ground plane. This is one of those times when it seems
simple is good or better.
What a party line when trying to listen to AO-16, hi!!
