My flavor for S band is- I use  an old TS700A 2 meter xcvr with the transmitter dissabled.  It is so easy that when in the heat of battle to accidently transmit into the dc.  These and similar radios are fairly cheap (less than $200),  and depending on the dc cost is well worth it.  The TS700 is now my stand alone, designated S band receiver.
