[amsat-bb] Using D710 to work the sats?

I have been playing with my homebrew antennas and the D710 I have in the van to try and work AO-51 portable and get ready for field day.
The first setup in the driveway was a pretty high pass and I couldn't hear a thing. My next try was out in the country. I had the D710 hooked up again and it seemed to be deaf. There was a fellow ham there with an 817. when we hooked it up to the 436 homebrew cheep antenna, it could hear quite well. Better than the Elk antenna that I just got in fact. 
My question is the D710 that tight on the rec. that its not going to hear the sat if I am off frequency a little?
Is there anyone on the board that is using or has used the D710 to work any of the FM sats?
if so, can you e-mail me off the board with any input you may have on this set up. I'd really like to be able to work field day and I am running out of time.
