Hi Dave,
My neighbor had the DirectWay satellite internet service a number of years ago. The specs are pretty good, in terms of transferring large files, but the latency is also very high. She found that for interactive applications, she got better performance from a 56k modem, and it was a lot cheaper! So, the answer to your question depends on what you are going to be doing.
We really need to work on that speed-of-light limit. It's really getting in the way.
