Here's a set of plans for an easy to build cheap Yagi:

I've built one (which testifies to the fact that it is easy to build!) and
it works like a charm. I've work SO-50 to within 5 degrees of the horizon.

Not as much "easily aim-able" gain there than a little ole handheld Yagi or
beam!

We are talking really weak signals from 500+ miles away ... A handheld Yagi
is going to probably out-perform the verticals!
