Gould, 

Your book got me interested and gave me plenty of information I needed to on the birds. It's well written and organized. And as you mention the price is right and goes to support AMSAT. 

I also recommend the Sattelite Handbook from the ARRL. A great follow up to your intro. 

I'll save Clint the chance to post about his most excellent site as well. He got lots of good reference material, geared toward the ham just getting started on the birds:
