For field day qso , You don't need grid . You exchange station ID.  WB5LHD 1d la . 
Control operator , which You should already have His info , says : confirm WB5LHD  1d la.
How many contacts could You make in one pass? And then a different operator for next pass on West Coast. Or if We're lucky , Maybe 3 passes . I am curious to know how many " confirmed " contacts were made on one pass ?
