Nick,
 
You're so right about "use it or lose it".  I've often called CQ through
entire passes and never made a QSO. After a few of those, I don't
get very excited about trying again.

In the spirit of "Use what you have to begin with!", I have had surprising success with a simple magmount CB whip cut for 10m. It sits in a corner of the shack on a large metal serving tray "borrowed" from the XYL. I've worked stations over in Europe with it.
