Thanks much for all the thoughtful comments.
The fact that the sat pings the plane is very revealing because it means that the timing of the return transmission from the plane does not have to be independently timed.  That makes the calculation of distance more credible.

Let’s hope that one day we’ll have a bird up that high, i.e. 22,000 mi.
