Quite true ... Fldigi is a cool tool set. A lot of the high altitude balloon crowd seems to have found this program useful as well. Once you get your soundcard interface working with your radio and computer there are many options. 

Using my 857D interfaced to an old WinXP box with a soundcard I can switch between JT65-HF, 1200 baud packet for ISS, receive AO-73 telemetry. Once I wrap up the November/December Journal I'll add FreeDV. No hardware changes needed ... click on a different icon and you have your new features/new mode.
