About the only thing I know for sure after working sats for a very long
time is that full-duplex is by far the best way to go.

Wait till the XYL wants something like an expensive trip or new furniture
and then throw the radio into the mix. The better option is to buy the
radio on the down low and then in the unlikely event that she discovers it
just try to look pathetic and sort of shrug and mumble some technical
nonsense.
