Your description sounds like you caught Fox-1a in high speed data mode.  We
are still doing some commissioning so expect mode switches without
necessarily hearing any warning.  If it sounds like "an old fashioned
acoustic coupler"  (and if you are old enough to know what that sounds like
:-) try switching FoxTlm to high speed mode.  For high speed mode you have
to be especially careful that there is no LOW PASS filter in the path.  You
need 10KHz or more audio band pass. (For low speed you need to be able to
hear down to 20-ish Hz.)
