Tom,
I run a raspberry pi with an RTL-SDR outside in a plastic box with a home
made coaxial collinear antenna.  The range will be better once I mount it
higher than the current 5 feet.  Sometimes I have to restart the wifi
bridge, but it's mostly hands off.
