SatPC32 is a very powerful program, but many aspects of it are not at
all intuitive or easy to decipher. I'll try my best to answer your
questions. I'm still working out some kinks in my own setup, but I've
learned a bit about it in the process.
As far as I know yes, you're limited to satellites A-L regardless of
registration.
I think the up/down arrows to the right of the frequencies must be for
downlink correction (thus it doesn't change the uplink).
Turning on V+ means that tuning the radio will feed those freqs back to
SatPC32, rather than just SatPC32 to the radio. If you're tuning the
radio's VFO but the computer keeps changing the radio back, then you
need to turn V+ on.
To save your corrected freqs to Doppler.SQL, open the CAT menu and hit
"Change/Store Dataf File", then save either the uplink correction or the
frequencies, or both. It's my understanding that you want to find the
right uplink correction and store that instead of the downlink
correction (although that's a bit more complicated when using a single 817).
Once you have the uplink calibrated, you can tune around the passband
either by turning on V+ and using the radio's knob, or use the arrow
keys (and numeric keypad) on the computer's keyboard.
With a single 817, it sets the rig into split mode where it uses VFO A
for receive and VFO B for transmit. It cannot tune a VFO that's not
being displayed, so in order to tune the transmit it's got to switch
from A (receive VFO) to B (transmit VFO), make the tuning adjustment,
then switch back to A. Yes, it's very annoying. There's also (small?)
risk of transmitting on the receive VFO, which could toast an external
preamp if you have one installed. I solved this problem by using TWO 817s.
