Welcome to the new century Vince. One of the first things you need to do with your new smartphone is to get one of those shock absorbing cases to prevent the screen from cracking, not from dropping it but from throwing it in frustration 😊
I have used my Android phone (Blackberry Priv) with an RTL-SDR Dongle using both SDRoid and SDRTouch and it works as good as when I use the dongle on any other computer. You need to make sure the phone supports USB On-The-Go so that he phone can act as a USB host. You will also need an OTG (On-The-Go) adapter cable. This plugs into the micro USD port on the phone and provides a standard USB jack. It also has special connections on the USB micro connector to signal the phone to swith to host mode. You can find these on ebay and other similar places for a few dollars.

If you’re going portable then look into Dioptra as well, it similar to Theodolite for iOS. Dioptra isn’t as feature rich as Theodolite but they both do the basics perfectly, they give you location data and you can judge minimum elevation in any direction you point it.
