[amsat-bb] TS-2000 Vintage Question

If I recall correctly, persons posting on the TS2K yahoo group noted that the finals originally were bipolar devices and that Kenwood upgraded those to mosfets before the upgrade. This discussion concerning how to choose a used TS2000 appears around July 5, 2017.
As for the NB, mine is on all the time and provides “some” relief, but only on USB, and yes on the sats.

What about the MOSFETs made them an upgrade? I was unaware of the change, although I do feel that somewhere along the line Kenwood changed the noise blanker circuit and that the NB in older TS2000s was better.

As far as I know, the birdie problem has been there from the start. In 2008 there was an issue with ceramic filters. I have a vintage 2002 (serial 407XXXXX) and have never had an issue with it. You can always check out the yahoo groups TS2000 archives. According to the TS2K group, after 2008, Kenwood started using mosfets which most feel was a significant upgrade.

I'm contemplating trading a IC-7300 for a TS-2000. I need a backup radio for satellites and EME. Are there any issues you users know about the 2000 vintage 2002? Was it plagued with birdies in the sat passband?
