John,

To my humble and first opinion (having made only one QSO with ZS2BK) the L-Band mode is as good as the U/V mode, a superb bird and congratulations to the project team. 

This part of the world we have 

Really amazing, hopefully it will be switched on L-band mode every week so that we may experiment more and it will encourage the community to move of higher/microwave frequencies which is quite challenging for most of us but with so much  rewarding experience.

I really encourage you to be in the club, just a transverter needed that you may build yourself or buy off the shelf.
