Yes Makerbeam and Open beam are both possibilities.
Another one to look at is Open builds. They are more like 8020 and
are sold by a number of sites. They have much cheaper connecting
hardware. http://openbuildspartstore.com/

The places like 8020, Misumi, and some Open Builds resealers
will cut the material to size for a small fee per cut. I do not have
a cutoff saw and my hack saw skills would not make the nice square
cuts.
