Thank you all very much for getting back with clarifications, it helps a lot.  This will help share the thrill with the youngsters, as well as lower the bar for this wonderful experience, they deserve it.
For the most part, the satellite contacts would be within US and Canada.  It'll mostly be hand-held or tripod operation out in the local park, so I was planning on initially handling the antenna and the PTT until they get used to the fast pace.  With sufficient traction, my dream goal is to hopefully take it to the schools in our district.

Thanks again.

For the most part, yes.  If it's a domestic contact, you are good to go.  If it's an international contact, there has to be a Third Party Operating Agreement with that country.  There is a list of countries on this page:

Note that what countries are or are not on the list may surprise you in some cases.  For example:  Cuba = yes; Great Briton = no.

Subject: [amsat-bb] Control Operator Clarification

Greetings,
Sometimes I have kids and would-be-hams watching me wide-eyed work the FM sats and I wished I could get some of them on the pass too.

So the question is, is it legal to allow them do it with me as the control operator handling the PTT ?
on a not-so-busy pass, of course !

Thanks and 73,
Umesh, k6vug
