Don,
Since you are using the USB version you don't need a USB-RS 232 converter. But, you might look at your COM PORTS in the hardware setup section and verify that it is operating correctly. You can update your driver(s) there as well.

DLP-USB232M.  But this driver is not available on the DLP site and they are
