I run FreeBSD for nearly everything, but I do have to access Windows 
apps occasionally. I use VirtualBox to turn Windows into an 
"application", and keep it closed when I don't need it.

If you don't have a Windows license, you might try running ReactOS 
inside of VirtualBox. I've heard good things about it.
