Bob,

Good thought to share L-band station inventory. You can see my sat 
antennas on my QRZ site. Station here for L-band:

Kenwood TS-790A with 1.2 GHz module (for being an antique, this radio 
works extremely well on all of the sats)
LMR 400 coax
German made helix about 2 feet long (sorry forgot the name, but 
extremely well made).

antennas are about 6 feet above ground as pictured on QRZ and 25 feet 
from rig. I am often astonished that even with the trees in the yard and 
small hills, I often catch the sats at 4 degrees. Seems like my 1.257 
MHz uplink is not very loud, but my output maybe around 5 watts. I was 
hearing AO-92 at 5 degrees this morning, but could not uplink
