I took a length of electrical PVC conduit 1.5 inch and put a wooden dowel inside
it. It was a tight fit but I ground some off to make it slide in with a bit of
force (hammer). The dowel was coated with a light 50/50 alcohol/shalac rubbed on
with a cloth. It is still in use after maybe 20 years.

I am not 100% sure about the wooden dowel. I may have use something smaller than
the inside of the PVC and only drove in a piece at each end that was tight. It
was wood though.
