Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report

1.            Upcoming School Contact

 

An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been
scheduled for Scouts Canada, Nova Scotia Council in Dartmouth, Canada on
Saturday, June 23 at 17:10 UTC via station VK5ZAI in Australia.  A “Space
Program Event” will be held with Scouts of various ages in conjunction with
groups earning their Science Badge Awards. The youth will learn about space,
the ISS and amateur radio.

 

2.            Successful ARISS Contacts Held

 

ESA-ESTEC arranged for an ARISS contact that was held on Tuesday, June 12 at
the Ruimtevaart Museum in Lelystad, the Netherlands with students that had
taken part in André Kuipers’ Mission: Spaceship Earth competition. Through
this program, Kuipers gave assignments to Dutch school children and the
winners of the competition were invited to the event. Kuipers chatted with
students and answered their questions about space. ARISS delegate Bertus
Hüsken, PE1KEH attended the event and presented ARISS activities to the
audience.  Telebridge station W6SRJ in California handled the radio

Students from St. Anne’s Primary School in Strathfield South, NSW, Australia
spoke with Joe Acaba, KE5DAR on the ISS through an Amateur Radio on the
International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Wednesday, June 13 via
telebridge station LU8YY in Argentina. Approximately 150 people attended the
event. The contact was integrated into the space curriculum across all
grades and was held along with the school’s science fair.

 

3.            Amateur Radio Newsline Covers ARISS

 

The June 15 Amateur Radio Newsline report #1818 included an item about the
recent move of packet operations to the UHF radio in the Columbus Module.

4.            Astronaut Training Status 

 

Barry Wilmore took part in an ARISS introductory class on Monday, June 11.
Wilmore is slated to fly with Expedition 41 in September 2014.
