ANDY THOMAS BACK ON EARTH

If you haven't seen the news yet, Andy Thomas is safely back on terra firma.
He has been the USA/NASA representitive since 22 January 1998, and the last!
In light of this, the only remaining crew onboard MIR are Russians
Talgat Musabayev and Nikolai Budarin. They speak and read Russian ONLY!
Therefore, any messages addressed as personal to R0MIR will not be understood
by any of the crewmembers unless it is in RUSSIAN! According to Dave Larsen,
N6CO, the messages that are sent up to the crew are not being read.
Now is a good time to bone up on your Russian!

R0MIR-1 PMS 3rd PARTY OPENING TO ALL

MIREX will be opening up R0MIR-1 for third party traffic again.
This means that you will be able to address messages to other radio amateurs.
It is asked that the HAM community use this with discernment.
Please use this medium if you have no email or packet/bbs systems available
to you to send personal messages to your friends.
THIS DOES NOT MEAN IT IS ACCEPTABLE TO SEND A MESSAGE TO YOUR FRIEND THAT
YOU COULD DO VIA LAND BASED PACKET SYSTEMS. eg. NODES/DIGIPEATERS/BBS's etc.

R0MIR-1 should have 3rd party turned on by 0140 UTC 24 June 1998.
Please bear with "us" as there has to be some adjustments made to
the PMS before 3rd party can be turned on.

FROM THE PRESIDENT OF MIREX

It has been told to MIREX that the Equipment Kenwood Donated to MIREX
has left the country. In a LL conversation with Kenwood, it was said that
Kenwood would NOT transfer MIREX equipment to Miles, thus MIREX can
only think of this as Miles has stolen or sold the equipment
for HIS personal gain.

This is NOT acceptable to MIREX or to Kenwood, and if this is true
that MIREX equipment has left the the USA and was sent to Moscow-
this would mean that Miles has violated Custom laws
both here in the USA and Russia.

There has been a LOT of talk about what Frequency Miles might use.
He has forgotten that a frequency here in the USA does NOT wrk in Europe,
or other parts of the world and can cause QRM to other satellites.

Miles stated that he was going to use the main core antenna. As
hams know that use MIR's PMS on 2 meters. The Kenwood rig and Kantronics TNC
were both moved to the same location as the SAFEX II repeater.
This would leave Miles's Project only one way to work. This would take
the 2 meter PMS off line, or the SAFEX repeater.

MIREX was told several times by Sergej [ RV3DR ] that the core module
antenna DOES NOT WORK! This is why the 2 meter equipment was moved to
the other antenna located in the Priroda module [ by SAFEX ].
If you have worked MIR for a few years, you would notice the signals
are much better on this antenna.

Thus, this would only leave the option to take the SAFEX II repeater
off line, and MIREX does NOT agree with this option either.

Germany SAFEX group told both Miles and Sergej that is can NOT happen,
and also the SAFEX repeater power supply CAN NOT be used for any other use,
as it could cause severe damage and maybe a melt down.
As for taking the 2 meter PMS off line, MIREX is NOT for this and has sent
a Fax to Sergej saying the amount of hams that would use Miles's project
[ NOT for the average ham ] cost about 400-600 bucks extra - and this cost
in USA dollars --

As seen in messages, MIR's PMS is well used and is helping the Average Ham
learn how to work satellites. - This has a trickle affect on everyone -
A new ham buys a new radio and TNC. This helps out the
people who work for these companies ETC. Then one day this
ham will want to upgrade his equipment and start to work multi satellites.

MIREX does not support Miles Mann WF1F, and has NO association with Mr. Mann.
