David, not sure if you are interested in this or not, but I used a Yaesu
FT-50R for 2M uplink and a cheap radioshack scanner for downlink for almost
a year. While quite cumbersome, it worked great and I have many QSO cards
that say so. I actually find it easier to use then the full duplex radio,
and this is why. My TH-D7 requires that I "switch vfo's" before I can adjust
for doppler, so sometimes I forgot to switch back to the 2M vfo and ended up
transmitting on 440 instead of the 2M uplink. The scanner was easy - I just
pushed either the up or down button to adjust for doppler.  See the link
