Peter,

Welcome to the birds. As you'll learn each bird has it's quirks but the easiest to work is probably AO-51. Listen to a few passes first before keying up. This will hive you dome idea of how thing flow on the birds. You'll also get some practice in pointing the antenna & tuning for doppler. 

When you're ready to transmit, pick a pass earlier in the day, AO-51 tends to get crowded. 

I enjoy working sats because it's challenging enough to be fun, but not so much so as to get frustrating. 

Trust me, your first QSO will be very satisfying.
