A handheld receiver will sometimes be a little too sensitive with this type of configuration where you are using the same mast for the UHF and VHF antenna together. The front end of the receive HT will have a tendency to be a little desenced causing a slight reduction in audio quality on your downlink. This might be what you were experiencing.

What were you using to do the recording? Was it not the same radio as what you were listening to for downlink?

tweak a few things with coax and radio programming last evening, and that
seemed to make a noticeable improvement on the SO-50 (03:07Z) pass last
evening.
