Hello  Reid and other helpful OM's,

Problem meanwhile solved. Unscrewed the unit and tested various V regulators
and Opamps. Potmeters in rotor tested and all ok.
After checking the EL meter by 'in parallel' connecting another meter (audio
type) across the connections noted that this parallel meter was moving /
doing ok.
Surprised to see that the unit AZ meter now worked again !!!
All well now and running as before. Exact origin still rather unknown though
but all is working again ! (suspect a non functional contact ??)
