I have recently purchased the same transceiver.   If you plan on operating

Not the same transceiver, but what Clayton shows is how to operate using a
split frequency with the A and B VFO's, which the 706 also can do.   If you
have a second transceiver, or a receiver (such as a decent SDR), then you
can operate full duplex.   I have not attempted either, yet (as weather has
not be cooperating here in the Northeast USA).

FM is basically the same (half duplex with split frequency), but you need
to enable tone on uplink vfo for full functionality (and much less tuning,
especially on 2m).
