Bob,

I remember it. Was in Jr. HS and the Science Teacher
explained the whole concept of it to our class and I
was awed by how it could just stay up there and not
fall down.

Now, we just take satellites for granted. We think nothing
of picking up a handheld XCVR and talking to folks halfway
across the country through one of them hurtling through
the sky above.  WOW!!

This day (10/4) in 1957 the first satellite was put in orbit by the Russians.  Many of us remember it!  The rest is history.
