The general rules for keps are:
The lower the altitude the greater the drag and the more frequently you need to
update your keps.
Unmanned satellites
150 - 300 miles Weekly
300 - 500 miles every 2 weeks
500 - 5000 miles monthly
5000 - 20000 miles every 2 months
22,500 once a decade
Manned satellites
Shuttle Every day
Mir Twice a week.
Your actual mileage may vary.

Subject: [sarex] Mir Keps
I just (0120 UTC 8/3) heard considerable packet activity on 145.985. It
was such a strong signal that I suspected a local terrestrial source, but
it then rapidly faded.
I then looked at my latest orbit predictions, and found that they predicted
a pass from 0058 to 0107. I am using the latest Keps sent out by Amsat,
but when I run the prediction, it reports that the element set epoch is 90
days ago.
Can someone explain to me why I am having this discrepancy? Should I have
Keps with a more recent element set epoch?
Thanks and 73,
Paul W4SKI
